THE CIRCADIAN HOTEL

As our world continues to make technological advances and globalisation of transportation increasingly makes distance feel smaller, our modern society has become fast-paced. Humans have become perpetual motion machines, convinced that doing is more valuable than being. Yet, it is the stillness between the notes that gives music its beauty. In the rush of activity, there is no opportunity to integrate your life experiences. Precious moments and memories slip like sand through your fingers because you couldn’t take a moment to stop and be present. This society is not sustainable and is directly affecting millions of peoples mental health, we are all constantly running through life and time.

This hotel aims to address this fast paced society, breaking the binary between fast and slow and creating a common ground between the two, as they can and must co-exist to create a balanced life. Three different guests from fast short stays to slow long stays will experience time differently in this building their internal body clocks will be regulated using circadian rhythm principals addressed through light, resulting in healthier sleeping patterns which benefits their overall wellbeing. The hotel is designed to become a mini representation of Newcastle, slowing people down and allowing them to really be present and enjoy what the city has to offer between their journeys and during their stays. Staff will also experience time differently as their job roles and distances of tasks are exaggerated. The entire building becomes a play on time and motion.
